Walking into a supplement store for the first time can make pre-workout seem far more complicated than it really is. One container promises explosive energy, another focuses on concentration, and a third has an ingredient list long enough to make you wonder whether you're buying a supplement or reading a chemistry textbook.

If you're just getting started with exercise, though, the strongest formula on the shelf isn't necessarily the right one.

For many women, a good beginner pre-workout is simply one that provides a reasonable amount of caffeine, clearly explains what else is in the formula, and fits the way they train. There's little value in taking a product loaded with stimulants if it leaves you shaky, uncomfortable, or unable to sleep later that night.

The science isn't quite as straightforward as the marketing.

According to the NIH, research on citrulline and exercise performance remains limited, with studies producing mixed results. Some people may also experience stomach discomfort after taking it.

That doesn't make citrulline a useless ingredient. It simply means there's less reason to treat it as a guaranteed performance enhancer.

Creatine is different from a typical pre-workout

Creatine deserves a place in the conversation, although it doesn't really work like a traditional stimulant.

It also doesn't depend on taking it immediately before exercise.

How much caffeine is reasonable for a beginner?
